The Midwest Implant Institute mourns the loss of a true pioneer, visionary, and dear friend—Dr. O. Hilt Tatum. His passing marks the end of an era, but his influence on the world of implant dentistry will endure for generations to come.
Dr. Tatum was more than just a leader in the field; he was an architect of modern implantology. His groundbreaking techniques and relentless pursuit of excellence reshaped the way we understand and practice implant dentistry today.
Yet, beyond his incredible achievements, Dr. Tatum was a mentor, a teacher, and, to many—including our founder, Dr. Alfred “Duke” Heller—a true and loyal friend. The bond between Dr. Heller and Dr. Tatum was forged in their shared passion for pushing the boundaries of surgical excellence and educating the next generation of implantologists. Their friendship was one of mutual respect, deep trust, and a shared vision for the future of the profession they both loved.
In honor of their legacy, the Jacksonville University Alfred L. “Duke” Heller & O. Hilt Tatum Comprehensive Oral Implantology Residency Program stands as a testament to their life's work. Founded in 2022, it is the first and only residency of its kind, and through this program, Dr. Tatum’s name and contributions will continue to shape the future of implant dentistry, ensuring that his impact extends far beyond his lifetime.
As we remember Dr. O. Hilt Tatum, we do so with profound gratitude. His brilliance, kindness, and generosity of spirit have left an indelible mark on all of us. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his teachings, innovations, and passion will live on in every student, every doctor, and every patient whose life has been changed by his work.
Take your rest, Dr. Tatum. Your legacy will forever be etched in the heart of implant dentistry.

At MII, a doctor can take any course in our Spring and Fall catalog. But if you're ready for continual one-on-one surgical training, the first step is to attend our hands-on intro implant course. In our FLAGSHIP COURSE, doctors travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the All-Inclusive Surgery Course to cover the foundations of successful dental implant treatment through lectures and hands-on workshops, culminating with placing an implant on a live patient under MII mentor supervision. Completing this course is the only prerequisite to begin the Midwest Implant Institute Surgical Externship Program.
